Supreme Court of India Contemplating Live-streaming of court proceedings: SC judge

Supreme Court judge and chairperson of its e-committee, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, on Friday stated live-streaming of court proceeding was on the edge of becoming a reality.

The judge was speaking at the inauguration of a new site for decisions and e-filing.

Justice Chandrachud used the event to clear the air on whether virtual courts had actually replaced bodily courts.

The judge said the idea behind virtual court system wasn't to replace physical courts, but, rather, to demonstrate the "flexibility" of the Indian judicial system to make certain that access to justice wasn't denied even during the toughest of times.

"The idea is to demonstrate the flexibility of the Indian Judicial system.  Not for a moment do we would like to replace the hearing.  But we know the need to safeguard the general health of our attorneys, litigants who come to our nation or across the nation," Justice Chandrachud stated in his speech.

Talking about the new e-filing procedure, Justice Chandrachud stated that there were videos to train the attorneys.

"We do not place the burden of getting access to justice on taxpayers and attorneys.  We take that responsibility and burden on ourselves.  The idea is that each and every court complex has to have infrastructurally supplied and manned e-seva kendra," Justice Chandrachud stated.
